Yezda Urfa: 3 Almost 4,6 Yea (Sacred Baboon 1989 USA Symphonic Progressive 1976)
This is a slightly deceptive upload. A long time subscriber asked me to make a video for "something from the late eighties". Although this album was released in 1989, it was actually recorded in the mid 1970s. Yezda Urfa deserve more recognition. Their self-financed debut Boris lead many to compare them to Gentle Giant and Yes, however by the time of Sacred Baboon's 'non release' they carved their own niche in energetic, inventive symphonic prog - the album, a feast of shifting time signatures and bipolar changes in tempo... The madness continues in the accompanying video. 'The Kingdom Of Crooked Mirrors', directed by Aleksandr Rou, falls somewhere in between 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'The Wizard Of Oz'. A young Russian girl (with gravity-defying pigtails) befriends her reflection and enters a batty fairy tale land, learning important moral lessons about honesty and the importance of friendship. Hugely popular in the Soviet Union, the movie (and source novel) have been variously called pro-communist and quietly anti-establishment. Make your own mind up if you ever catch it, but the vibrant visuals have gone down a treat with couch-locked stoners - especially when they discover the imprisoned boy is called 'Gurd'... Spell it backwards, wink, wink!
